पत्रकारिता आणि साहित्य याची चर्चा करणे, पत्रकारांच्या दृष्टीने मनोहारी असले तरी आता वेगळा विचार केला पाहिजे, असे मला वाटते. हे मान्य केले पाहिजे की साहित्याचा प्रवाह, वाचनसंस्कृतीला चालना देण्याचे काम आपल्या हातातील माध्यम किंवा वर्तमानपत्राच्या मार्फत पत्रकार नेहमीच करत आले आहेत आणि पुढेही करत राहतील. मात्र हा सर्व प्रवास दूधाची तहान ताकावर भागविण्यासारखाच राहिला आहे.

एक महत्वाची गोष्ट म्हणजे ज्या प्रकारची सक्षम व्यासपीठे साहित्य क्षेत्रात उभी राहायला हवी होती, तशी ती उभी राहिली नाहीत. त्यामुळे वर्तमानपत्रे किंवा त्यांच्या रविवार पुरवण्या यांनीच त्यांना व्यासपीठ देण्याचे प्रयत्न केले. वर्तमानपत्राच्या धबडग्यात काय होते आणि काय काय होऊ शकते, हे वेगळे सांगण्याची गरज राहिलेली नाही. एका विशिष्ट विषयाला पूर्ण न्याय मिळाला, अशी अपेक्षा वर्तमानपत्रांकडून केली जाऊ शकत नाही. त्याचे कारण असे आहे की, पत्रकार किंवा तो काम करीत असलेले ते माध्यम याचे प्राधान्यक्रम नेहमीच वेगळे राहिले आहेत. एवढेच नव्हे तर ते नेहमीच बदलते राहिले आहेत. त्यामुळेच वर्तमानपत्रांकडून साहित्य क्षेत्राला मिळणारा प्रतिसाद हा नेहमीच अपेक्षाभंग करणारा राहिला आहे. या पार्श्वभूमीवर साहित्याने आपली इतर व्यासपीठे सुदृढ करण्याची गरज आहे.

मूळात हे लक्षात घेतले पाहिजे की पत्रकारिता आणि साहित्य यात मोठे अंतर आहे. माध्यमे ही आजच्या व्यवहारी जगाचा आरसा आहेत तर साहित्य हे जनमाणसाच्या आतील मनाचा आरसा आहे. माध्यमे ही वर्तमानाविषयी विशिष्ट किंवा तोकड्या वेळेत झालेल्या आकलनावर बोलण्याचा प्रयत्न करतात तर साहित्य ही दीर्घकालीन आणि अनुभवाच्या पातळीवर रुजेलेल्या आकलनावर होणारी निर्मिती आहे. माध्यमे जे सादर करतात, तो सामुहिक कृतीचा आविष्कार असतो आणि त्याला ते माध्यम, त्याला मिळणारा वेळ किंवा जागा, त्या माध्यमांची धोरणे अशा अनेक मर्यादा असतात. अशा मर्यादांत साहित्य निर्माणच होऊ शकत नाही. माध्यमांच्या रूपाने होणारी निर्मिती ही बहुतेक वेळा अल्पकाळ टिकणारी असते तर साहित्य निर्मिती मात्र दीर्घकाळ टिकते. अर्थात, साहित्य निर्मितीची ठिणगी पेटविण्याचे काम माध्यमे करू शकतात, पण माध्यमाच्या धबडग्यात ती निर्मिती होणे अवघड असते. कारण हा धबडगा केवळ घटनांच्या आक्रमणाचा नसतो, तो पत्रकाराच्या सेवेच्या चौकटीचाही असतो. एकप्रकारे ते सोपेविलेले काम असते, स्वीकारलेले नसते. साहित्याचा स्वीकार मात्र निर्मात्याने स्वत:हून करायचा असतो. एक महत्वाचा भेद म्हणजे माध्यमांत जगरहाटी महत्वाची ठरते आणि साहित्यात नवनवे आविष्कार महत्वाचे ठरतात. माध्यमे दररोजच्या घडामोडींच्या दृष्टीने प्रवाही आहेत, असे म्हणताच येईल. पण ती नव्या जगाचा स्वीकार करताना ती तेवढी प्रवाही असतातच, असे नाही. साहित्य आणि पत्रकारितेतील अंतर हे आणि यासारखे अनेक भेद वाढवतात, ही बाब लक्षात घेऊनच या विषयाचा विचार करावा लागेल.

आपल्याकडे अनेक साहित्यिक सुरवातीच्या काळात पत्रकार होते, त्यांना लेखनाची आवड कदाचित पत्रकारितेने लावली असेल, पण त्यांना आपले लेखन कसदार करताना पत्रकारितेपासून दूर जावे लागले, हा मुद्दाही लक्षात घेतला पाहिजे. त्याचे कारण पत्रकारीतेमुळे मानसिकतेत जे बदल होतात, ते बदल होय. उदा. पत्रकाराला प्रत्येक माहितीविषयी संशय घेण्याची सवय लागते आणि ती त्या व्यवसायाची एक प्रकारे गरजही आहे. पण त्यामुळे तो सामान्य आयुष्य जगूच शकत नाही, तो जीवनातील प्रत्येक गोष्टीविषयी साशंक होतो. जीवनाविषयी एक तर्कटपणा त्याच्या आयुष्यात काम करू लागतो. पण साहित्यिकाला असा विचार करून चालत नाही. त्याला आपले अनुभवविश्व तर समृद्ध करायचे असतेच, पण नव्या गोष्टींचा स्वीकार अधिक संवेदनशीलतेने करावयाचा असतो. पत्रकारही नव्या गोष्टींकडे पहात असतोच, पण त्याच्या व्यवसायामुळे नव्या गोष्टी त्याला इतक्या वेगाने धडकत असतात की त्या त्याच्या आयुष्यामध्ये केवळ बातमी किंवा लेख लिहिण्यापुरत्याच रहातात. अनेकदा तर असेही घडते की त्याच्या आयुष्यात ज्या बदलांची गरज असते, ते बदल तो बातमी किंवा लेखांमध्ये हिरीरीने लिहित असतो, पण जेव्हा त्या बदलांचा स्वीकार करण्याची वेळ येते, तेव्हा त्याचे लक्ष दुसऱ्या विषयाकडे वळलेले असते. दोष त्याचा नाही, पण त्याला व्यवसाय अधिक विचार करण्याची मुभाच देत नाही, असे मला वाटते. साहित्याच्या दृष्टीने पत्रकार नेहमीच काठावर बसलेला असतो, असेही म्हणता येईल.

आणखी एक गोष्ट म्हणजे कसदार साहित्याची आणि तेवढ्याच कसदार पत्रकारितेची निर्मिती होण्यासाठी जी परिस्थिती समाजात आजूबाजूला लागते, तिचा आपल्या समाजात असलेला अभाव. समाजातील दारिद्रयामुळे या दोन्ही क्षेत्रात असे काही ताण निर्माण झाले आहेत की दोन्हींचे मूळ स्वरूप आणि त्याचा आस्वाद याला आपोआपच मर्यादा आल्या आहेत. वर्तमानपत्रांचे कधीही न संपलेले आर्थिक प्रश्न हे त्याचे एक उदाहरण. आपल्या भाषेतील कथा, कविता संग्रह आणि कादंबरीच्या पहिल्या आवृती संपण्यासाठी लागलेली वर्षे, हे त्याचे दुसरे उदाहरण. आर्थिक आणि त्या अनुषंगाने आलेल्या सांस्कृतिक दारिद्र्याने या मर्यादा आणखी ठळक केल्या आहेत. गेली काही वर्षे वर्तमानपत्रे आशयाला देत असलेले महत्व किंवा मूल्य पाहिले तरी याचा खुलासा होतो. चांगल्या आशयाला चांगले मोल देण्याची क्षमता आजही वर्तमानपत्रांत आलेली नाही, यातच सर्व आले. आशयाची जेवढी चांगली आणि निरपेक्ष छाननी व्हायला हवी, तेवढी वर्तमानपत्रांत केली जात नाही. चांगले आणि पुरेसे मनुष्यबळ नसणे, हे पुन्हा दारिद्र्याचेच लक्षण होय. अशा अडचणींचा मोठा पाढा वाचावा लागेल, पण तो काही आपला उद्देश्य नाही.

अर्थात, या सर्व गोष्टींवर मात करून अनेक पत्रकारांनी साहित्य निर्मिती केली आहे आणि अनेक जण करतही आहेत. पण तो त्यांच्या वैयक्तिक क्षमतेतून झालेला आविष्कार आहे. त्यांनी या दोन्ही क्षेत्राच्या सीमारेषा ओळखल्या आणि त्यानुसार स्वत:त बदल केले. परिस्थितीवर कष्टाने मात केली. मानसिक गुलामी झुगारून दिली. मनाला तसे घडविले आणि त्यातून त्या त्या भूमिकेला ते न्याय देऊ शकले. पण ज्या अर्थाने पत्रकार आणि मराठी साहित्य अशी चर्चा आपण करत आहोत, त्या अनुषंगानेच ही मांडणी येथे केली आहे, एवढेच.

माणसाला व्यक्त व्हावे वाटणे, ही तर गरज आहे आणि त्या अर्थाने साहित्याला अनन्यसाधारण महत्व आहे. पण त्याचा जीवनानंद घेणारा वर्ग आजही मर्यादित आहे. त्यामुळे समाजाच्या समृद्धीमध्ये मोठी कमतरता निर्माण झाली आहे, हे मान्य केले पाहिजे. निर्मिती आणि त्याचा आस्वाद अस्सल असावा, अशी अपेक्षा योग्य असली तरी त्यात आम्ही अशा वेगवेगळ्या कारणांनी कमी पडत आहोत. ही कमतरता काढून टाकण्याची पहिली पायरी म्हणजे तिची जाणीव होणे आणि दुसरी पायरी ती काढून टाकण्याचा प्रयत्न करणे. पत्रकारांनी आजचे बदलते जग खऱ्या अर्थाने समजून घेण्याचा आणि तेवढेच महत्वाचे म्हणजे त्यात आपले अस्सल अस्तित्व शोधण्यास सुरवात केली तर हा बदल शक्य आहे, असे मला वाटते.
